Activists, Forest officials and residents of Dungarpur have come out in protest against the PWD, Dungarpur for felling trees on the Teejvad-Sintex Chauraha of the town. PWD cutoff the trees in order to give way to the ongoing highway four-laning work in the region.
Reason for the protest being that the trees were home to the endangered White Ibis and Cormorant species, and this was their breeding season, hence the nesting habitat was destroyed in one stroke. The adult birds were seen nesting their eggs and hatched little ones in makeshift nests on nearby tree branches.
Residents of the city have made all possible efforts to protect the birds and their little ones, by covering the exposed nests with netting cover, providing water and grains nearby to the nests so that the adults have no need to go beyond to look for food and water.
Satya Prakash Mehta, and Orinthologist and advisor to a NGO in Bharatpur, and Forest Officials have started taking steps to proceed with action against the PWD.
