Muharram is the first month of Islam which is beginning from tomorrow according to the Bohra’s Misri Calendar.

Besides exchanging greetings, the eve of New Year is celebrated by organizing grand feast with number of homemade delicacies. Family members meet up and have the food together in one large plate decorated nicely with number of fruits, sweets and other delicious food.

Muharram is considered as one of the most significant months after Ramzan. The socially attached Bohra community indulges in various social and religious activities throughout the month, specially the first 10 days of Muharram where Bohras observe mourning in remembrance of the Battle of Karbala which took place on 10th of Muharram (680 AD) killing 72 companions of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who was martyred by the tyrant army of Yazid.

Every year, the first 10 days of Muharram are observed in the memory of this one of the gravest tragedies of Islam.
