Today, on the occasion of Naag Panchami, devotees were seen flocking to the temples of Naag Devta (Snake Deity) since early morning to pray and offer religious rituals to gratify the Lord.

Naagpanchmi was celebrated amongst most of the Hindu communities with utmost gusto and devotion.

According to Pandit Madhusudan Sukhwal, the priest at Mahakaleshwar Temple, the day falls twice in a year, once on Shukla Panchami and then on Krishna Panchami in the month of Shraavan. Many devotees present idols of Naag Devta in the temples.

“Besides the pooja of Nag Devta, the day is also marked by not having food prepared a day before and observing fasts. Women go to temples or worship idols of Naag Devta in the premises”, informed Pandit Madhusudan.

He added, “At 5 pm today, 125 priests will perform Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva with a Ghada (container) having 1008 holes at Mahakaleshwar Temple.”
