Laylat ul-Qadr: Night of Decree

Laylat ul-Qadr: Night of Decree

It was just another dark night. But it became the Night of Power because of what was revealed in the darkness. It is now known to us, a night better than a thousand months. The dark night is illuminating the world and the Quran is guiding the humanity ever since.

It was just another dark night. But it became the Night of Power because of what was revealed in the darkness. It is now known to us, a night better than a thousand months. The dark night is illuminating the world and the Quran is guiding the humanity ever since.

Laylat ul-Qadr or Shab-e- Qadr, the Night of Destiny, is the anniversary of two very important dates in Islam that occurred in the month of Ramadan. “Qadr” is in Arabic for destiny. It is the anniversary of the night Muslims believe the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Laylat ul-Qadr is to be found in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. There is no history in the Quran as to when the specific date is. Many Shia Muslims who make up the minority of Islamic followers, including the Ismailis (especially dawoodi bohras), observe Laylat ul-Qadr on the last 23rd night of Ramadan.

The Night of Power is celebrated powerfully. Masjid(mosque) and communities celebrate the night by staying up all night and praying, reading Quran, etc. Children buy chocolates, dry fruits and other eatables in day, so that they can stay up whole night. Earlier, just after Laylat ul-Qadr, Eid preparations were started by making Sevaiyaans(Vermicelli) at home,  but with time this practice got vanished with available packed sevaiyaans in market.

The worship and the vigil of the Night of Power are a treat to the soul. The heart tends to melt into tears of heartfelt gratitude. The body is in a state of angelic ecstasy.  The soul strives to reach nearer to Almighty Allah. In this holy month of Ramadhaan let us strive to seek the Night of Power and its bliss. May Allah reward us with His bountiful blessings. Aameen.
