Udaipur Murder Update: Senior Officers hint at Pakistan connection, 5 arrested, two Police officers suspended

Minister of State for Home Rajendra Yadav and Director General of Police, Rajsathan, ML Lathar have claimed that ongoing investigations into the murder of Kanhiaya Lal Teli at Udaipur have revealed that one of the accused has Pakistan connections. In the investigation, it has come to knowledge that Gaus Mohammad, one of the arrested accused had visited Karachi, Pakistan in 2014, and he has connections with Dawat-e-Islami.

As per Rajendra Yadav, this incident is not communal in nature but an act of terrorism. Gaus Mohammad, as per investigation reports, had visited Karachi in 2014 for 45 days allegedly for training. Gaus had also visited some Middle Eastern nations in 2018-19 and had been to Nepal in 2021. Investigations by NIA have revealed that both the immediate accused, viz. Mohammad Riaz Attari and Gaus Mohammad have been in connect with people in Pakistan and their call records show communication with specific mobile numbers of Pakistan.

The Minister also said that the investigations by NIA and the Special Investigation Team suggests that members of this terrorist cell are still in Udaipur and other places in Rajasthan.  This incident should not be seen as a communal strife, but as an attempt by internationl terrorist bodies to create a situation of communal discord in the state and country.

Meanwhile, media updates given earlier today, the Director General of Police, ML Lathar said that 5 people have been arrested in this matter till now. The SHO and ASI of Dhanmandi Police Station in Udaipur have also been suspended, for not cognizance of the situation and complaints and letting the matter get out of hand.

Situation in Udaipur

Curfew is still ongoing in Udaipur till further orders and Internet services remain suspended.  The funeral of the deceased, Kanhaiya Lal Teli took place peacefully today afternoon.

The Background

As per updates given to media, the DG said that reports indicate that Nazim Ahmed, a resident of Dholi Bawdi had given a written complaint on 10 June to Dhanmandi Police Station, where the complainant mentioned unsolicitated comments on a social media post by the deceased Kanhaiya Lal. Following this, the Police arrested Kanhaiya Lal and he was given bail on 12 June. On 15 June, Kanhaiya Lal presented his greivance at Dhan Mandi Police Station, alleging that 4-5 youth of a specific community had been visiting his shop and giving him life threats. Following this, the ASI of Dhan Mandi called both the parties and negotiated an understanding, to which both the sides concurred. Subsequent to this, no incident was recorded in the matter, till the murder of Kanhaiya Lal on 28 June.
