Child marriage averted in Udaipur

Police intervention saved a 17-year old minor girl from the menace of child marriage in Nevatalai village that falls under Zawar police station of Udaipur district.

Marriage of Pooja, daughter of Ambalal Salvi and Sugna Devi had been fixed with Jaideep. The wedding was scheduled for Thursday. Both the parties had distributed invitation cards to their respective guests for the wedding.

Bhojraj of NGO Sri Aasra Vikas Sansthan informed that when the news reached one of the NGO workers that the girl being married was a minor, he rushed to the school to get details about the girl. On getting a confirmation that the girl was indeed a minor, he reported the matter to Chandrasheel Thakur, additional SP (rural).  Additional SP then directed Zawar police to intervene in the matter.

Police went to the to-be bride’s place and post investigation found the complaint to be correct. Police then warned both the parties and referred the case to Child Welfare Committee (CWC). CWC has been asked to take girl to a shelter home for two days to rule out the possibility that parents might still carry out the wedding rituals.
