National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has fined a doctor Rs 4.5 Lakh for amputating two fingers of a minor boy without seeking consent from his parents.

Fingers of Sampath Kumar, son of Udaipur-resident Narayan Lal,  had come under the blades of a domestic flour mill in 2004. Sampath was rushed to a private clinic run by doctor A K Sarkar, a West Bengal native. The doctor assured the parents that everything will be fine but amputated two of his fingers without seeking parent’s consent.

The doctor had in his defence, denied amputating the fingers Sampath. He infact said that on seeing the condition of the child, he had refused to treat him. However, on the insistence of his father, he gave first aid to the kid and bandaged him.

The court however did not find any truth in the defence of the doctor and the statements of the defence witnesses. The court ordered the doctor to pay the complainant Rs 4.5 Lakhs as compensation and Rs 5000 in litigation charges.
