"I was upset with God!" Hallucinations lead man to Burn Effigies in Temples…Udaipur Police apprehend torcher

Taking immediate action under sensitive circumstances, Udaipur Police have arrested a 24 year old resident of Surajpol area for committing arson in a few places of religious worship in Udaipur.

THE INCIDENT

As per the police report, Dinesh, alias Aakash, 24 year old and resident of Harijan Basti near Surajpol area of Udaipur was apprehended for committing arson in the Shiv Mandir and Hanuman Mandir located at Surajpol, a temple at Regar Colony and in Fateh Memorial. The incident took place in the late evening hours of 18 August.

Once the news of the deities statues being burnt became public, there was chaos in the area and around Udaipur. Members of the Surajpol Traders Association, Janta Sena, Congress, BJYM resented the incident and asked the police to take immediate action.  Before a communal angle came into the picture, police set up a team of 21 officers and nearly 150 CCTV camera footages across the area were observed to check the recce of the area and observe movement around the time of the incidents.

In the CCTV recordings, the Police observed a tall man with long hair riding a Scooty was making rounds of the Shiv Temple, Hanuman Temple and then the Bheruji Temple near midnight on Wednesday. He was seen there multiple times and then his movement shifted to the Gulab Bagh area. Informants told the constable in-charge Shakti Singh that this youth was Dinesh alia Aaklash alias Lui, who works as a municipality cleaner in the area.

HALLUCINATIONS MADE ACCUSED BURN THE EFFIGIES

Police apprehended Dinesh alias Aakash alias Lui from his home at Kacchi Basti immediately. On interrogation, the accused accepted committing arson in these four locations and said that he was unhappy with God. The accused said that he had a feeling that someone was beating his daughter and the Gods were not helping him. Interestingly, the accused is unmarried. He explained that he feels that is daughter always accompanies him and seeks his help saying that someone is trying to harm him. For this, the accused has been to many temples and prayed. Since the hallucinations continue, the accused took the route of arson and burnt the effigies to demonstrate his resentment with the Almighty.

The accused’s father, Prakash is a cleaner with the Udaipur Municipality. Due to an accident, Prakash is unable to work and his son, the accused has been involved in the cleaning activities of the area where the incident occurred. The CCTV footages showed him moving around in the area on his two-wheeler. The accused explained that he carried a bottle of petrol with him, with the help of which, he committed arson and then went home.

Prakash says that this is not first time that his son has done something like this. He consumes alcohol regularly and has been burning his clothes and shoes at home time and again.

The police team that effected this investigation and arrest include Surajpol Police Station In-charge Hanwant Singh, ASI Itwari Lal, Shankar Lal, Head Constable Vikram, Sukhdev, Constable Anil Puniya, Rakesh, Manmohan among others.
