Murder Update: Udaipur Bar refuses to take up Divya’s case, passes Resolution

In a unanimous resolution passed by the Udaipur Bar Association, it was decided as a matter of solidarity, that no member of the UBA as well as none of the other five districts of the Udaipur division will take up Divya Kothari’s case in the infamous Ruchita Jain murder case.  Bharat Joshi, President of the UBA said that if anyone is found to have taken up the case, disciplinary action will be taken, as per ToI.  Divya Kothari is accused of the murder of Ruchita Jain that took place at Orbit Complex in New Bhupalpura on December 1, 2016.

Joshi, in his statement to ToI also said that this is not the first time such a decision has been taken – the UBA has taken such stands in previous murder cases in which the victim was a lawyer and member of the Association.  He added that the accused has a right to defend himself, but he will have to find a lawyer outside the Udaipur-Wagar area, as no member of this area will advocate his stand.

Earlier, on Thursday, Dec 8, the Police was granted an extension of remand for 22 year old Divya Kothari, for closing on further investigations with additional interrogation and consolidating proof to establish the accusation in a more concrete manner.  Divya was produced before court on Thursday where the police managed to get additional remand from the court.  A large crowd had gathered outside the court room, where the accused was produced in the evening – the police being careful as it was expecting sharper reactions from the lawyer community of which Ruchita was a closely associated member.

The case, which has already been complicated by different versions of the incident both by Police and the accused over the last 10 days, is in its culmination, before the court trial.  The police, in their investigations and search activities both at the site of the murder, the residence of the accused as well as at Badi, where the accused had gone post the murder, have recovered stained clothes and the spanner that was one of the weapons used for the murder.

Police have yet to recover another sharp weapon that was used for the murder.  During post mortem, it was seen that the victims jaw was brutally damaged and facial muscles as well as nerves were badly damaged.  Even the autopsy report submitted by the investigation medical board indicated that the victim had gone through immense trauma before finally succumbing.
