Personnel of the Salumber police team was allegedly attacked by a mob at Intali village of Salumbar area of Udaipur on Tuesday, when they had gone to arrest a thief.  A dozen police officers including an Assistant Sub Inspector, Head Constable and a few Constables were attacked by the mob.

Jiwatram, a Assistant Sub Inspector got severely injured on his head, shoulders and back. While Jagdish Singh, one of the constables of Salumbar police station got one of his rib broken during the attack.

As per police, the incident occurred in the wee hours on Tuesday morning when a gang of 5 thieves went to the village to steal goats from the backyard of a house. They were spotted by the villagers who later caught one of them identified as Kamlesh Meena, while others managed to escape. The villagers thrashed him badly and locked him inside the Panchayat hall. As per the information the scene turned ugly when the villagers refused to hand over the thief Kamlesh to police as they want that other members of the gang should also be arrested together. When the police tried to open the gates of the Panchayat Hall the villagers attacked the police.

SP Salumbar, Arshad Ali said, "We got the information about the incident on Tuesday morning upon which, first a team of Rathora police post went to the site.  A team from another police post followed upon assessing the seriousness of the matter. The villagers, however, refused to hand over the accused to the police saying that they will punish him as per their rules. Soon, additional police force was deployed when the situation went out of control. Aggrieved over the, incident the villagers started pelting stones on the police team and also attacked them with sticks and rods.  As many as 15 people had been detained by the police so far and more will be detained as investigation  progresses."

While three police vans were damaged during the incident, all the injured police officers were transported to hospital.
