Protest by Udaipur Jewellers: Sarafa remains closed

Udaipur Jeweller Association has kept their shops closed today to protest against the authorities as police has failed to nab the culprits who looted jewellery of several lakhs from Sanjay Mehta, a jeweller from Thokar Choraha on August 10.

 

Udaipur Jeweller Association has kept their shops closed today to protest against the authorities as police has failed to nab the culprits who looted jewellery of several lakhs from Sanjay Mehta, a jeweller from Thokar Choraha on August 10.

More than 100 shopkeepers carried out a rally from Sarafa Bazar to Court Circle and handed over a memorandum to District Collector, demanding the urgent and result oriented action in this case which has shaken the sarafa market of Udaipur.

Mohan Makhija, president of Jewellers association said that, “We have to stand against this issue, after all it happened to one of our co-professional, and the authorities have to take serious action to make us feel safe.”

Mohan says that Udaipur Sarafa Bazar is one of the most active markets in the region with a turnover of about Rs. 5 crore every day. “There are about 450 shops registered in our association”, says Mohan.

The jewellers were shouting slogans to fullfil their demands when the rally passed through several areas of the old city. During the procession a small argument came up between protesting jewellers and one another jeweller who did not closed his shop.

The scuffle soon got over when some senior members interfered in and asked the shopkeeper to respect their sentiments and close the shop.

All the jewellers made a human chain at Delhi Gate Circle and then demonstrated against authority in front of the Collector’s office before handing over a memorandum.
