Life Imprisonment

Udaipur, January 20, 2025 - Sanjay Roy, convicted for the brutal rape and murder of a doctor trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sealdah court on January 20, 2025. This follows his conviction just two days earlier, on January 18, 2025. In addition to the life sentence, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000/- on Roy and ordered the West Bengal government to grant Rs 17 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family.

Sessions Judge Anirban Das ruled that the case did not qualify for the death penalty, which is given only in the "rarest of rare" cases. Instead, Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was found guilty of rape (Section 64), causing injury that led to the victim's death (Section 66), and murder (Section 103(1)) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 103(1) allows for the death penalty or life imprisonment, Section 66 has a minimum of 20 years imprisonment, which can be extended to life, and Section 64 mandates imprisonment of at least 10 years, which can also extend to life.

The horrific incident took place in August 2024, prompting the High Court to transfer the investigation to the CBI. The CBI filed its chargesheet before the sessions court, and the matter eventually reached the Supreme Court. After months of investigation, the case has now concluded with the sentencing of Roy.

This case has attracted significant attention, and the judgment serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for justice for victims of violence.
