Swift action, interrogation and a 24 hour search operation has facilitated the arrest of one among the 6 people who have been charged with kidnap, rape and extortion in the infamous Udaipur Gangrape case of Sunday, 1 March.
A black day for Udaipur, in many a sense, the incident of gangrape has cast a shadow over the safe city quotient of Udaipur.
As per latest reports received from Goverdhan Vilas Police station, ASP Hanwant Singh Rajpurohit informed that his team has apprehended one of the accused, Pradeep, s/o Bhawar Meghwal, resident of 628 Kailash Colony, Gali No 3, Surajpol, Udaipur. This arrest followed the statement given by the girl, who was raped on the rail tracks at Debari.
Earlier during the day, the victim, a resident of Agra, was taken to court to have her statement recorded. A large crowd had gathered at the court premises, with expectations of some action.
The victim had filed an FIR along with her partner and company owner at Goverdhan Vilas Police Station, on Monday evening accusing 6 persons of kidnapping, ransom and gang rape. In her statement given in court, she said that 6 people were in the car that kidnapped her and her friend as they were leaving Kathiyawadi restaurant at Goverdhan Vilas Transport Nagar, late Sunday evening. After driving around Udaipur and upcountry, including Haldighati, which is around 35 km from Udaipur, the car returned to Debari and then 4 people drove them to the railway track at Debari.
Two persons raped her one after the other and left the girl and her partner along with the car near the tracks, and fled. However, during the circuit around the city, the kidnappers had called the girls company owner and demanded ransom. This was around 11pm on Sunday night. The conversation between the kidnappers and owner is not yet clear, but after the discussion the car was driven back to Debari and the girl was raped on the tracks.
After the victims statement and further interrogation by the police, the team got into action, and attended each location as mentioned in the girls statement Proof was gathered along with cctv camera footage. Suspects were rounded up today morning and one of the accused rapists was arrested late today evening.
The police is also investigating why the company owner did not approach the police when the ransom was demanded. This could have avoided the rape incident altogether. A lot of stories will be unwound once this case is solved.
