Udaipur continued to remain tense albeit under control today after protests went out of control yesterday. Despite imposition of Sec 144 a large crowd gathered at Court Circle in the afternoon around 4pm and ensuing tension between police and crowd resulted in stone pelting and lathi charge leaving policemen and some citizens injured.

Though Sec 144 was imposed in city yesterday on the issue of Bengali labourer’s murder in Rajsamand, there were quite a few rallies and group activities on display in the city yesterday. The crowd indulged in slogan raising, stone pelting and property destruction leading to police resort to lathi charge and arrest.

11 policemen along with 20+ other people were reportedly injured in the clash and went to MB hospital for treatment.

Crowds were gathering throughout the day at different areas including Town Hall, Chetak circle, Madhuban, Fatehpura but police managed to disperse them by use of power. Things went out of control when the crowd reached court circle and got support from advocates. This got them to gain strength there and keep police at bay. It is after this strength gained weight that things went out of control.

Even the IG and SP had to come down to street with lathis to get the crowd under control. Police even fired rubber pellets to get things under control.

Considering the tense situation, internet services will continue to remain suspended till further notice. Imposition of Sec 144 is also in place.

As per the latest updates on Friday morning, situation remains tense but no untoward incident has been reported. Schools and colleges remained open but the attendance suffered.

It has also been reported that routes connecting Udaipur to Jhadol, Kherwara etc are under heavy police surveillance given that a large number of arrested people yesterday were from outside Udaipur.
