Udaipur, January 18, 2025 - The Education Department in Rajasthan has decided to close 259 schools across the state due to zero or low enrollment. These schools will be merged with nearby institutions as per the orders announced by Senior Education Director Ashish Modi.
Schools to Be Merged with Nearby Institutions
In the past 10 days, 449 schools in Rajasthan have already been merged with other nearby schools. The recent decision will further consolidate 259 more schools to optimize resources and improve education delivery. In Udaipur district, eight schools are set to be closed. Among them, four are girls’ schools, meaning the affected students will now attend co-educational institutions.
Financial Savings from School Closures
Experts have highlighted significant financial benefits from this move. Each school incurs an average operational cost of ₹10 lakh annually, covering teacher salaries, grants, and facilities for students.
Teachers from the merged schools will be transferred to other institutions, helping to address the shortage of teaching staff in many schools across the state.
Previous Closures in January
Earlier, in January, the Rajasthan government had closed 169 primary schools that were operating only on paper. The decision was prompted by a report on December 11 that exposed the issue of non-functional schools in the state.
This consolidation effort aims to enhance the efficiency of the education system while addressing critical issues like teacher shortages and resource allocation.
