32 Fake Universities in India: UGC Warns Students
UGC warns of 32 fake universities operating across 12 States of India; check the official list here to avoid enrollment in invalid institutions
Feb 20, 2026 - The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a warning about the growing network of fake universities in the country. In the past two years, the number of fake or unapproved universities has increased from 20 to 32, spread across 12 States.
UGC has released a list on its official website advising students to avoid enrollment in these institutions. For quick reference, the list is appended at the end of this post.
Delhi has the highest number with 12 such universities, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 4. Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka each have 2, while Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh have 1 each.
The UGC emphasised that degrees from these universities are invalid and that these institutes are not authorised under the UGC Act 1956 to award degrees. Thus, qualifications obtained from such universities will be considered invalid for jobs or further studies.
Furthermore, it is advised that students should validate every higher education institution through official sources before taking admission. Students can visit the official UGC website to see the verified list of recognised universities before enrolling.
