The University Grants Commission (UGC) discussed with universities the beginning of Academic Bank Credit (ABC). Students can use ABC to switch between institutions and programmes, earning the necessary credits before receiving their final degree from the parent university.

Because the academic bank of credits (ABC) is an essential component of the higher education structure being implemented under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the UGC has asked various universities to register with the ABC and monitor the development and operation of the curriculum at the university level.

The ABC is intended to be a national-level entity that will function as a bank for academic purposes, with students serving as academic account holders. ABC will offer a number of services, including credit verification, credit redemption, and academic award validation. Furthermore, it will promote and make it feasible for all students to create an academic bank account with ABC in order to commute credits towards any other degree, diploma, or certificate.

Aside from conventional HEIs, the commission has previously requested students enrolled in institutions offering online and remote learning programmes to register an account on the ABC Portal.
