THE Asia University Rankings: India Up in Numbers, China in Quality

India tops Asia with 128 institutions in Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2026, surpassing Japan, but fails to secure a spot in the Top 40; China dominates the top tier

April 25, 2026 - A record 128 institutions from India have secured a place in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2026 in the field of higher education. In terms of numbers, India has now ranked first across Asia. Japan stands in second place with 115 institutions.

However, on the quality front, not a single Indian institution is included in the Top 40 list. China continues to dominate this ranking, occupying half of the spots in the Top 10. China’s Tsinghua University has remained number one in Asia for the eighth consecutive year. Of the Top10 institutions, five are from China alone. Singapore and Hong Kong have two institutions each in the Top 10. Japan’s University of Tokyo has reached its best-ever fourth rank in a decade.

This year’s ranking includes a record 929 universities from 36 countries and regions. Experts believe that India’s broad participation is a sign of expanding access to education.
