CBSE Board Exams 2026: Digital Paper Checking for Class 12

CBSE will evaluate Class 12 Board exam answer sheets through an on-screen marking system from 2026; digital process aims to make evaluation faster, transparent and error-free

 |

Feb 11, 2026 - The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major change in the evaluation system for Class 12 Board examinations. Answer sheets will no longer be checked through the traditional manual method. Instead, copies will be evaluated digitally through an On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

CBSE has already started preparations for this transition. CBSE believes the new system will make evaluation more transparent, faster, error-free and cost-effective. The new arrangement will be implemented from the 2026 Board examinations.

According to CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, around 46 lakh students appear in Class 10 and 12 Board exams every year. Because of the large number of candidates, checking answer sheets takes significant time. To address this issue, the Board has decided to introduce the digital evaluation system.

Teacher Training and System Setup

As per CBSE guidelines:

  • Teachers of Classes 11 and 12 will be deployed for on-screen marking.
  • They will receive proper training before evaluation begins.
  • Login IDs will be sent to teachers via their email and phone numbers.
  • Schools will need to update teachers’ data on the portal.
  • A call centre will be set up to resolve technical issues.
  • Instructional videos will also be released for guidance.

Infrastructure Requirements

CBSE has asked schools to maintain the required infrastructure, including:

  • Computer lab with public static IP
  • Windows OS 8 or above
  • Minimum 4 GB RAM
  • Internet browsers (Adobe Reader, Chrome, Firefox)
  • Internet speed of at least 2 Mbps
  • Uninterrupted power supply

New System Features

How the new system will work:

  • After exams, answer sheets will be scanned using high-quality scanners.
  • Copies will be converted into digital format.
  • Examiners will log into the system and check answers on screen.
  • Marks will be entered directly on the digital interface.
  • Teachers can check copies at their convenience without affecting school classes.
  • Total marks will be calculated automatically by the system.

This move is expected to significantly reduce evaluation time and improve accuracy in the Board examination process. There will be no margin of error because marks will be calculated automatically by the system. This also removes the need for manual verification of totals. The paperless evaluation system will help reduce environmental impact. It will also speed up the overall evaluation process and track unchecked questions.

Class 10 Board exam paper checking will continue to be done manually, as of now.
