CBSE Exam Pattern: 50% Competency-Based Questions

CBSE has announced major reforms in exam patterns and evaluation starting this year; no rote memorisation

 |

Jan 1, 2026 - The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced comprehensive changes in the format of e-question papers and the evaluation methodology for the upcoming examinations. According to the new guidelines, it will no longer be possible to pass exams solely through rote memorisation. Students will now be required to develop practical and conceptual understanding of subjects.

To make question papers competency-based, the Board has set clear standards. Under this framework, 50% of the questions will be competency-based, including case-study and source-based questions. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) will carry a weightage of 20%, while traditional short and long answer questions will be limited to 30%.

Additionally, 75% attendance will be mandatory for appearing in the examination. Class 10 students will be given the option to appear for exams twice a year, with the best score being considered final.
