December 4,2024 - Starting from the 2026-27 school year, CBSE will offer two levels of Science and Social Science subjects: Standard and Basic. This system is already in place for Mathematics. This change is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to make learning more flexible and less stressful.
Standard level: For students who want to study the subject in detail (advanced level).
Basic level: For students who prefer an easier version of the subject (regular level).
The CBSE curriculum committee has approved this idea. Now, it needs final approval from the CBSE governing body. CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh confirmed that this system will start once NCERT releases updated textbooks in 2026. CBSE aims to match students learning abilities and to reduce pressure and give students options based on their interests.
CBSE Students Can Choose Between
Mathematics-Standard (advanced level)
Mathematics-Basic (regular level)
For the 2023-24 Board Exams
15.88 lakh students chose Standard Maths.
6.79 lakh chose Basic Maths.
In future students will have time to decide whether they want to study Standard or Basic levels. They can also change their decision within a certain period. This system gives students more choices and helps them learn at their own pace.
