Deaf and Dumb on the way to become Engineers

They were denied as there were no specific directions at the level of the Rajasthan government to admit deaf and dumb students in technical education

They wrote to prime minister, HRD minister and many concerned agencies and their efforts finally resulted in a historic decision by the Rajasthan government in June 2011 when government issued specific directions to admit such persons in technical education.

Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic took the responsibility to teach them electrical and civil engineering. The proud Prakash and Nitesh are now first year students of diploma engineering at Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic, Udaipur.

Praksh is all rounder, he knows automobile repairing, electrical repairing whereas Nitesh (whose mother died when he was just three years old) believes in self reliance, he is a newspaper hawker and earns his livelihood on his own.

Now being in technical education, he will not be able to distribute the newspaper as he has to work hard for technical learning.

The principal of the Polytechnic and all teaching faculty of the polytechnic have taken the training of the two differently able students as a challenge and also as an opportunity to do everything for the development of all the sections of the society, the concept which Vidya Bhawan believes in.

Vidya Bhawan (Estd. 1931) is a sprawling complex of 15 institutions working for social change through education. Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic (Estd.1956) is a multi-dimensional technical education wing of Vidya Bhawan Society. This Polytechnic is affiliated to the Board of Technical Education Rajasthan, Jodhpur and is approved by the AICTE New Delhi.

VB Polytechnic strives to produce socially sensitive, technically competent diploma engineers. The Polytechnic also works with village community for technical skill improvement and livelihood enhancement of Rural Youth. Our vision is to develop and build technical manpower, which is not just highly skilled in specific field, but socially sensitive, enterprising citizen also.

To transform Praksah and Nitesh into efficient and skilled engineer is reaffirmation of our above vision…..again translated into an action.
