Udaipur Students Prepare for FMGE 2025

Limited MBBS seats push students abroad; foreign MBBS graduates must pass FMGE

FMGE 2025

Udaipur, March 20, 2025 - The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) will likely be held in July 2025. The exam is conducted twice a year by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). Candidates must submit their eligibility certificate by April to appear for the exam. Students who complete their MBBS from foreign countries must pass FMGE to practice medicine in India or be eligible for NEET PG. The exam is known for being difficult, with an average pass rate of less than 25%.

What is FMGE?

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a mandatory medical licensing exam in India for Indian citizens and OCI cardholders who studied MBBS abroad. Conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE), FMGE was introduced under the Screening Test Regulations, 2002. Candidates must have a provisional or degree certificate and, if required, an eligibility certificate. Those who pass receive a screening test pass certificate from NBEMS after biometric verification and document checks.

Udaipur Students Preparing for FMGE

Every year, around 50,000 students across India take the FMGE exam, including many from Udaipur. Several Udaipur students go abroad for MBBS studies, as their parents work in countries like China, Japan, and the Arab nations.

Students Go Abroad Due to Limited Seats in India

In India, there are about 1 lakh MBBS seats, but only 50,000 are in government colleges. With 24 lakh students appearing for NEET UG, competition is very high. Due to this, many students go abroad for MBBS, as private medical colleges in India charge high fees.

NEET PG Cut-Offs Lowered, But FMGE Standards Remain Strict

The FMGE cut-off remains at 50%, ensuring only qualified doctors practice in India. However, in recent years, the NEET PG cut-off has been lowered. For 2025, it has been set at the 5th percentile. Last year, students with zero percentile were allowed for counseling.

The NEET-UG 2025 exam is scheduled for May 4 in offline mode. After last year’s controversy over a Physics question error, students and educators are hoping for a clear and balanced question paper this time. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is expected to avoid mistakes that caused nationwide protests in NEET-UG 2024.
