QS Rankings 2026: IITs, JNU & BITS Pilani in Global Top 50
QS World Rankings highlight India's academic strength as IITs, JNU, and BITS Pilani secure top 50 global positions across multiple disciplines
April 7, 2026 - Global higher education analytics organisation Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) recently released its 16th annual university rankings. In this ranking, four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani have secured positions among the world’s top 50 institutions across disciplines.
The ranking analysed more than 21,000 courses across 1,900 universities from 100 countries. A total of 99 Indian institutions have been included this year.
In engineering, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras are ranked among the top 50 globally. IIT Delhi has also secured a place in the top 50 across six programmes, including Chemical Engineering (48th), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (36th) and Computer Science (45th) Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (44th, its best in over a decade), and the Engineering and Technology broad area (36th).
Based on individual performance, Indian School of Mines Dhanbad has achieved a global rank of 21 in Mineral and Mining Engineering.
According to QS CEO Jessica Turner, Indian institutions have shown increased momentum this year in competing at the global level.
