IITs Plan Campus Exchange: Students Could Soon Study at Any Campus
IITs are planning a cross-campus exchange system allowing students to study at another IIT for a semester and transfer credits back to their home institute
Feb 19, 2026 - The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are set to introduce a major reform possibly from the current academic session. The plan is to open up their campuses to one another. Under this system, students will no longer be restricted to their allotted campus; instead, they will be able to take selected courses at other IITs.
Once this new arrangement comes into effect, students will be allowed to study for a semester at another IIT and transfer the earned credits back to their home institute. This is expected to boost academic exchange among the IITs.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras Director Padma Shri V Kamakoti said that course mapping across various programmes is underway so students can study at another campus without academic loss.
“We are mapping curricula across multiple programmes in various IITs,” he said, adding that “Once that is matched, our students from IIT Madras can spend a term in another IIT or a student from IIT Kanpur or Delhi or Indore can come to the Madras campus to study some courses and earn credits which we will transfer to the home institute.”
Each IIT will work out the number of visiting students it can host after a study of their infrastructure and capacity. The system will initially be implemented in a limited and controlled manner.
