IITs to Add 6,500+ New Seats by 2028
July 28, 2025 - Students preparing for admissions into the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) across the country have a reason to cheer. Five among the third-generation IITs (set up after 2014) — Jammu, Palakkad, Bhilai, Tirupati and Dharwad — will collectively add 6,576 new seats in BTech, MTech, and PhD programmes by the academic year 2028-29. Additionally, 130 new faculty positions will be created.
This increase will happen in a phased manner and is part of a larger expansion plan by the government. An announcement of the seat increase had been made in the Union Budget.
Currently, the 23 IIT institutions across the country admit more than 17,700 students at the undergrad level. This figure is expected to rise to more than 24,000 in the coming five years.
In the current academic session alone, 1,364 seats have already been added. Subsequently, 1,738 seats will be added in the second year, 1,767 in the third and in the fourth year 1,707 seats will be added.
According to sources in the Ministry of Education, the seats are being increased in line with market demand and employment opportunities, ensuring that students not only earn degrees but also acquire relevant skills for the job market.
For infrastructure development - including classrooms, hostels, faculty housing and other facilities -Rs 1,828.79 crore will be invested.
