International Education – A Career option that should not be ignored

Indian students out perform their peers across the globe.  This phenomenon has been around for years now, thanks to our education system.  Hence opting for an international university to undertake graduate courses has become a much sought after option.  Bright and academically superior students opt for higher education at their grad level rather than waiting for post graduation opportunities.

High cost is the major deterrent for students wanting to go abroad and thus the availability of scholarship options become the center of focus.

Good counseling during Classes X and XI ensure that students and parents get to understand the right approach, opportunities in various countries and the associated costs.

IITs being the institute of choice for many engineering enthusiasts are still not ranked among the top 200 universities globally and countries like US, UK and Canada boast of highly ranked college programs.

Universities in the western countries also give opportunities to mix technical studies with Fine Arts, for example.  Research and internship options at undergraduate level make the program more interesting and develop an all round personality.  A high ranking student Rahul (name changed on request) scored a 2400/2400 in SATII and was given scholarship options by top universities in US and Canada, while Harvard also considered the students application.  Rahul chose Columbia University and opted for a humanities subject – Theatre as a minor along with Science and Technology majors, which is impossible in Indian college education systems.

Exams that need to be mastered for International Education

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

A students reading, writing and aptitude is assessed in this examination, and this tests the students’ academic readiness for under graduate courses.  The SAT score is accepted by most colleges in United States, United Kingdom and Canada apart from other countries.  Over 2 million students across the globe take the SAT exam every year and the number is growing.  The SAT Score is valid for 5 years.  A score of 1560/1600 and 2100/2400 in the SAT Subject Exam must be aimed for.  Focused training, mentoring and counseling goes a long way in ensuring good performance.

Test of English Language as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

TOEFL is mandatory for students belonging to non-native English speaking countries and is a standardized test to judge one’s English language ability.  This is important because the medium of teaching in foreign universities is English and a good command over the language will ensure that the students does not face any trouble in understanding instructions or communicating with peers and teachers.  The TOEFL score is valid for 2 years and is accepted by more than 9000 colleges across 130 countries and the top 100 colleges in US.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

IELTS is a standardized examination which measures language proficiency of aspirants aspiring to study or work in native English speaking countries.  IELTS is now one of two exams included in UK government list of Secure English Language Tests (SELTs).  The score is valid for 2 years and the British Council offers the exam across 42 locations in over 1000 locations.
