Udaipur, February 18, 2025 - A large number of students at Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU) have failed in their second-semester exams due to confusion about the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 rules. They were unaware that they had to pass at least one mandatory subject (Hindi or English) in the first year. As a result, many students will have to repeat the first year, losing an entire academic year.
MLSU implemented the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 last year and introduced the semester system for all undergraduate courses. Under this system, students must pass 50% of the mandatory subjects (Hindi and English) in the first year itself. However, many students mistakenly believed they could pass these subjects at any time before completing their degree, as per the old system.
When the second-semester results were announced, students initially thought their results were incorrect because they had done well in their elective subjects. However, after closely checking their mark sheets, they realized they had failed in mandatory subjects. Many were unaware that passing at least one mandatory subject in the first two semesters was compulsory.
Students who failed in both Hindi and English will not be promoted to the second year. They cannot appear for the third-semester exams and must repeat the first year, clearing at least one mandatory subject to move forward.
One of the biggest concerns is that there is no provision for re-evaluation in mandatory subjects. This means students cannot apply for a re-check and are certain to lose a full academic year.
Under NEP, marks are no longer shown in the results. Instead, students receive credits, and the mark sheet only mentions whether they have passed or failed. A student must score at least 40% in both internal and external exams to pass.
Earlier, exams were conducted once a year, and students had three years to pass mandatory subjects. Now, the academic year is divided into two semesters (six months each), and students must clear at least one mandatory subject in the first year. Under NEP, students have a maximum of seven years to complete their undergraduate course. However, if they do not pass at least one mandatory subject in the first year, they will not be promoted to the next semester.
