MLSU Revises PhD Admission Rules, UGC NET Score Now Mandatory

PhD candidates to undergo interview; coursework includes six papers with Ethics and Research Methodology

 |

Udaipur, Nov 19, 2025 – The Academic Council of Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU) has passed new UGC guidelines defining the admission criteria for the PhD (Vidya Vachaspati) degree. Instead of an entrance exam, admission will now be based on the UGC NET score. Students will have to undergo an interview, and after that, admission will be granted based on merit.

Admissions are likely to follow this new admission process from January 2026.

Until now, candidates who had passed a Postgraduate programme with a minimum of 55% marks in any subject could appear for the PhD entrance exam. Under the new rules, admission will be based on the merit derived from the NET score and interview marks.

Three categories have been specified:

  • Candidates eligible for Assistant Professorship and Junior Research Fellowship
  • Candidates eligible for Assistant Professor and PhD
  • Candidates eligible only for the PhD

Some universities in the State have already implemented this new pattern, while it is under process in others.

The university has completely redesigned the PhD coursework, claiming that no other university in the State offers such a coursework structure. Under the new rules, PhD scholars will have to take six papers — 4 classroom-based and 2 computer-related. These also include papers on Ethics and Research Methodology.
