NCERT Book Row: Supreme Court Says 'Heads Must Roll! We Will Not Close the Case'; Bans Book
The Supreme Cour issues show-cause notices to NCERT Director Dr Dinesh Prasad and School Education Secretary in the Class 8 textbook controversy, bans the book, and warns of criminal contempt proceedings
Feb 26, 2026 - The Supreme Court on Thursday (February 26) issued showcase notices under the Contempt of Courts Act to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Director Dr Dinesh Prasad and to the Secretary, Department of School Education, in the NCERT Class 8 textbook case. The country’s apex court has asked why criminal contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them or those behind the offending section of the book.
A three-member Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi was hearing the suo moto case which was registered on Wednesday titled "In Re : Social Science Textbook for Grade-8(Part 2) published by NCERT and ancillary issues”. On Wednesday (February 25), the Supreme Court had expressed strong displeasure over a mention of “judicial corruption” in a chapter of the book titled “The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society”.
"We would like to have a deeper probe. We need to find who is responsible and we will see who are there. Heads must roll! We will not close the case," CJI Kant said to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who was representing NCERT in Court.
The Bench found the apology by NCERT in an earlier press release inadequate and said that “there is not a simple word of apology in it”, noting “The way this director has drafted this notice, there seems no remorse but justification…It seems to be a deep-rooted conspiracy.”
The Court have also banned the book in India and abroad and ordered that all copies be seized as also all digital versions be taken down immediately. It further warned that any attempt to circulate it would amount to wilful breach of its order.
The Court will hear suo motu case on this matter on March 11.
