NCERT May Get Deemed University Status in January

After UGC approval, NCERT could offer undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes

Jan 3, 2026 - The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) may soon be granted the status of a Deemed-to-be University. According to sources from the Ministry of Education, a final decision on this proposal is likely by the end of January. Although a formal approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) is still pending, the groundwork for granting the status is complete, say sources.

Currently, there are around 145 Deemed Universities in the country. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was the first institution in India to receive this status in 1958. Institutions recognised as Deemed Universities under the UGC Act, 1956, enjoy academic and administrative autonomy.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had announced in 2023 that NCERT would be developed as a full-fledged research university. Once granted Deemed University status, NCERT will be able to expand its academic programmes and function as a comprehensive research university.

If NCERT receives this status, it will be authorised to award undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees. The institution will be mainly funded by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education.

NCERT is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education and plays a crucial role in improving the quality of school education and curriculum development in India.
