Feb 26, 2026 - Following strong objections from the Supreme Court of India, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has stopped the sale of its Class 8 Social Science textbook and also taken it down from its official website. According to reports, high-level government sources have indicated that the reference to “corruption at various levels of the judiciary” will be removed from the book.

NCERT has convened an internal meeting to review the recommendations of subject experts and officials who had approved the chapter. It also issued a press release saying that as per the direction of the Department of School Education & Literacy (Ministry of Education), the distribution of this book has been kept on strict hold until further orders. It added that the “same shall be re-written with consultation of the appropriate authority, as necessary, and would be made available to students of Class 8 accordingly on the commencement of academic session 2026-27.

On Wednesday (February 25), the Supreme Court had expressed strong displeasure over a mention of  “judicial corruption” in a chapter of the book titled “The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society”. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant had said he would not allow anyone to defame the judiciary, calling it a “tentatively calculated, deep-rooted attempt” to denigrate the judicial system. He made it clear that the law would take its course and said he was taking suo motu cognizance of the matter.

The matter had been raised by senior Advocates Kapil Sabil and Dr Abhishek Manu who termed it deeply disturbing and expressed concern over such material being taught to school children.

On Thursday (February 26), a Bench comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice Vipul M Pancholi, and Justice Joymalya Bagchi will hear  the suo motto case registered on Wednesday titled "In Re : Social Science Textbook for Grade-8(Part 2) published by NCERT and ancillary issues”.
