Udaipur, February 20, 2025 - The Supreme Court has ruled that Indian students who want to study medicine abroad must qualify for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) to get an Eligibility Certificate. The Court dismissed all petitions challenging this rule.

Court Upholds NEET Requirement

A bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran stated that the rule ensures fairness and transparency in medical education. The requirement was introduced in 2018 under the Foreign Medical Institution Regulation, 2002, by the Medical Council of India (now the National Medical Commission).

No Exemption for Students Who Took Admission Without NEET

The petitioners requested a one-time exemption from NEET, but the Court rejected it. The Court said that students who knowingly took admission in foreign medical institutions without qualifying for NEET cannot seek an exemption now.

Regulation is Legal and Fair

The Court clarified that the regulation was introduced under the statutory powers of the Medical Council and is not unconstitutional or arbitrary. It reaffirmed that these rules are essential to maintaining medical education standards in India.
