The petitioners did not have subjects mentioned on promotion certificates issued during Covid-19
Udaipur, November 16, 2024 - The Rajasthan High Court has given its verdict in the petition filed by students who were denied admission to NEET UG 2024 because their promotion certificates did not mention subjects during the Covid-19 period. The Court ruled that in the context of admissions in the NEET UG 2024 Stray Vacancy Round, technical deficiencies cannot deprive deserving candidates of their fundamental rights. It ordered that these candidates be allotted colleges based on merit.
Justice Sameer Jain issued this order on a petition filed by Rohit Choudhary and others.
Advocate Tanveer Ahmed told the Court that the petitioners had secured positions in the NEET UG 2024 merit list. However, they were not assigned colleges in the Stray Vacancy Round since their certificates from the COVID-19 promotion cycle lacked subject information. These seats were instead given to candidates who were lower on the merit list.
It may be noted that students of Grade 11 who were promoted during COVID-19 period without having to sit for exams, were issued certificates that did not mention their subjects, including Biology. On being denied admission to NEET UG 2024 due to this reason, the candidates filed a plea in the High Court .
The Court’s decision has put the admissions of lower-merit candidates at risk.
