NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam Announced for June 21 After Paper Leak Row, Govt Proposes CBT from Next Year

NTA cancelled the May 3 NEET UG exam amid CBI probe into alleged paper leak; Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan promises stricter reforms while Tamil Nadu CM renews call to abolish NEET

Udaipur, May 15, 2026: The National Testing Agency (NTA) today announced that the NEET UG re-examination will be conducted on June 21, 2026. This follows the cancellation of the examination held on May 3, subsequent to allegations of paper leak that is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Why Was the NEET Examination Cancelled

The  NTA received a complaint on May 7 that a guess paper being circulated on social media had a substantial set of questions that resembled the actual NEET examination question paper. The Higher Education Department took cogniscance of this matter and immediately conducted and enquiry.  The investigation was subsequently handed over the to the CBI and the government in talks with the NTA and investigation agencies agreed to cancel the examination held on May 3 and re-conduct the examination.

Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister said that this difficult decision was taken to ensure that deserving students get their due.

Governemtn Accepts Responsibility, Suggests CBT

The Union Minister said that despite following the recommendations of the Radhakrishnan Committee, there was breach in command chain and the government takes full responibility of this. Pradhan also announced that from the coming year, the NEET UG examinations will be held under the CBT mode, allegeing irregularities in the conduct of the examination. He said that the government will have zero tolerance towards malpractices in examinations. 

Abolish NEET

CJ Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu expressed his concerns on the NEET-UG paper leak and said that NEET should be abolished, citing serious structural flaws in the examination system. He urged the government to consider abolishing the NEET and consider admitting students to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses based on their Class 12 marks. His argument that NEET disadvantages students from rural areas, government schools, vernacular-medium backgrounds and economically weaker sections, and favours those who can afford expensive coaching.
