Rajasthan Court Orders Mandatory School Safety Audit from July 1
Government submits a five-year action plan which proposes construction work in 859 school buildings in the next financial year
March 20, 2026 - Rajasthan High Court has said that schools do not need to be five-star facilities, but their buildings must be safe. The Court reiterated that from July 1, no school should be operated without a safety audit. It directed that accountability of schools must be fixed and action should be taken against those operating in unsafe buildings.
A two-judge Bench of Justices Mahendra Kumar Goyal and Ashok Kumar Jain said this while hearing petitions registered suo motu after the Jhalawar school incident in July 2025.
During oral remarks, the Court observed that an ordinary person can build a house for Rs 25 lakh, whereas the government spends Rs 1.5 crore on similar construction. The Court instructed all parties to sit together with the Advocate General and prepare a concrete plan to improve the condition of school buildings.
Justices Goyal and Jain directed the government to fix responsibility for school safety.
On behalf of the State Government, an affidavit by the Chief Secretary was submitted during the hearing, outlining a five-year action plan which proposes construction work in 859 school buildings in the next financial year.
The judges suggested encouraging donors for building construction and making building designs available on a portal so that people can directly contribute to construction.
Advocate General Rajendra Prasad said that government schools will undergo audits by the Public Works Department, while other schools will be inspected by district-level committees.
The next hearing in the matter will be held on March 28.
