The Indian industry’s ambition to fulfill the "Make in India" dream hinges on producing skilled and innovative engineers. However, Rajasthan, the largest state by area, is trailing behind neighboring states in engineering seat availability, despite efforts from its premier institutes, IIT Jodhpur and NIT Jaipur.

IIT Jodhpur and NIT Jaipur: Key Institutions in Rajasthan

IIT Jodhpur and Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) Jaipur are the state’s top institutions focused on developing future engineers. Currently, IIT Jodhpur offers a total of 600 seats across B.Tech, Integrated M.Tech, and dual degree programs. MNIT Jaipur has 888 seats available in its engineering programs. Together, these institutes contribute 1,488 engineering seats in Rajasthan.

Rajasthan’s Seat Count Behind Neighboring States

According to education expert Dev Sharma, Rajasthan has fewer engineering seats compared to neighboring states. Uttar Pradesh leads with the highest seat availability of 2,344, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. These numbers were highlighted in a recent report from the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA), covering engineering seat allocations across 18 states.

Focus on Expanding Technical Education for "Make in India" 

The limited engineering seats in Rajasthan could impact its role in the "Make in India" mission, emphasizing the need for increased educational opportunities for aspiring engineers. Expanding engineering programs could be a step toward matching the technical education scale of states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, positioning Rajasthan to contribute more significantly to the national goal.
