RBSE: No Automatic Promotion in Classes 5 & 8 from 2026-27

Students giving Board exams for Classes 5 and 8 must secure minimum marks to be promoted; remedial teaching and re-exam system has been introduced

 |

Udaipur, Feb 9, 2026 - The Rajasthan Education Department has announced a major change in the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Exams (RBSE) for Class 5 and 8. Under this rule, the automatic promotion system for these classes will be discontinued. Students will now have to secure the minimum passing marks to be promoted.

However, those who have failed will be provided with special remedial teaching for 45 to 60 days by the Education Department. After this period, a re-examination will be conducted. Only those who pass this second exam will be promoted to Class 6 or Class 9.

This new rule will come into effect from the academic session 2026-27 and apply to both government and private schools across Rajasthan.

Previously, automatic promotion was applicable in Class 5, while minimum passing marks were required only in Class 8. Now, the minimum marks rule - of 32 marks in each subject - will apply to both classes.

The main objective of the new rule is to improve learning outcomes and overall academic results. According to the Education Department, the automatic promotion rule had reduced students’ seriousness toward studies and they moved to higher classes despite weak fundamentals, which later caused them to fail in upper grades.

Additionally, if students in private schools who are studying under the RTE quota fail they will not expelled from the school. In fact, the government will pay their fees again for the same class. The Education Department will, however, ask the school to explain the reasons for such failures.
