The Supreme Court ruled on July 2,2024, that there was no need to cancel the NEET-UG 2024 exam, despite issues in its administration. The three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, stated that there was no systemic leak of question papers to justify cancellation. However, the Court expressed "serious concerns" about how the National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the exam.
In its detailed order, the Court noted "multiple occurrences" during the exam that raised these concerns. It highlighted the NTA’s inconsistent management, which prompted a thorough review.
The ruling also mentioned that the Centre had already set up a seven-member expert committee, chaired by former Isro chairman K Radhakrishnan. The committee's tasks include examining examination security and administration, researching advanced data security protocols, and recommending updates to NTA’s policies and procedures.
Additionally, the committee will explore the possibility of international cooperation with examination bodies and educational authorities from other countries to share best practices and innovative solutions.
Given the expanded scope of its duties, the Supreme Court extended the committee’s deadline to submit its report to the Union Ministry of Education from August 22 to September 30, 2024.
In July, the Supreme Court gave a temporary decision on requests for a new NEET-UG 2024 exam. The Court admitted that a leak had happened but said a retest would depend on whether the leak ruined the whole process and if the people who benefited from the leak could be identified.
