In a recent development, the Supreme Court declined a plea seeking the postponement of certain papers of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) exams, scheduled starting today from May 2 and conclude on May 17,2024. A request was made to move some Chartered Accountancy (CA) exams because they were scheduled for the same days as the Lok Sabha elections, specifically May 8 and May 14,2024.
The bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra rejected the plea. They stated that the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) hadn't planned any exams on the election dates of May 7 and May 13.
The top court pointed out that changing the exam dates would be tough because a lot of arrangements are already set up for the exams. They stressed that altering the dates now could cause serious problems for students.
The court explained that deciding exam dates is a "policy decision," so they rejected the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) asking for a delay. Chief Justice Chandrachud highlighted the importance of voting rights and the practical issues for students who have exams and also need to vote.
ICAI's lawyer said changing exam dates to the second week of June would mess up everything, as they have been careful not to clash with election dates. With over 4 lakh students taking the CA exams, any changes now could be unfair.
