Udaipur, December 24,2024 - The Central government has made an important change in education rules for Class 5 and Class 8 students in schools under its control. Now, students in these classes can fail if they do not pass the year-end exams under ‘No Detention Policy.’

Extra Chance for Students: If a student does not pass the exams, they will be given extra teaching and another chance to take the exam within two months.
No Expulsion: Even if a student fails, they cannot be removed from school until they finish elementary education.

"If the child appearing in the re-examination fails to fulfil the promotion criteria again, he shall be held back in 5th class or 8th class, as the case may be. During the holding back of the child, the class teacher shall guide the child as well as the parents of the child, if necessary and provide specialised inputs after indentifying the learning gaps at various stages of assessment." - the notification added.

This change follows a rule made in 2019, where many states had already stopped the 'no-detention policy' for Classes 5 and 8. This policy previously ensured no student failed, regardless of their exam performance.

Now, students must meet certain criteria to move to the next class, but they still get an extra chance to improve.
