Udaipur, January 10, 2025 - In Rajasthan, 2,167 schools are running without even one student. Rajasthan is the second-highest in India for such schools. West Bengal has the most, with 3,254 schools having no students. Across India, there are around 13,000 schools without students. Rajasthan has 17% of these.

The information is from the UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education) report for 2023-24, which studies schools of all types (government, private, boarding, and madrassas). These empty schools still have teachers working in them.

Changes Over Time

In 2022-23, Rajasthan had fewer such schools (1,594) and fewer teachers in them (3,497). Fewer students are joining schools. The number of enrolled students in Rajasthan dropped from 1.8 crore (18 million) in 2022-23 to 1.7 crore (17 million) in 2023-24, a 5.2% decrease.

Government Action

The government has decided to combine 190 of these schools with nearby schools to make better use of resources. The report also showed that 7,688 schools in Rajasthan have only one teacher for all students.

This shows a big problem in Rajasthan’s education system. Schools without students and teacher shortages waste resources and impact the quality of education.

UDISE Report 2023-24 2022-23
Schools with zero enrolment 2,167 1,594
Teachers in such schools 4,398 3,497

Enrolments in schools with one teacher 2,25,187 3,29,091
