Being an IITian is not a dream anymore for students from Arts and Commerce streams.
There are 3 IITs already offering courses in designing.
For engineering students, getting into IIT is like a big dream come true. Every engineering students aims to become an IITian or at least they do strive to get an entry into the IITs. The point of discussion is mainly about the non-technical background students who wish to get an entry into an IIT.
It is now possible for the students of Arts and Commerce streams to get into IIT. There are many IITS which offer courses in designing and management and other subjects as well for students who are from the non-technical backgrounds.
Bachelor of Designing is a 4 year UG programme that covers design principles, images and photography. Candidates can get admission for this undergraduate programme through UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design). The exams for this course are conducted by IIT Mumbai and the subjects covered in this are visualisation and spatial ability, design thinking and problem solving, observation and design sensitivity, analytical and logical reasoning, language and creativity, environmental and social awareness.There are 3 IITs offering this designing course, IIT Mumbai (37 seats), IIT Hyderabad (20 seats), IIT Guwahati (56 seats). IIT Delhi has also introduced this course and it will be offered in the next academic session. IIT Jabalpur also has 66 seats for this course. Candidates who have completed 12th and are under 24 years of age can appear for the entrance exam for admission in this designing course.
Apart from B.Des, there is a 2 year PG course M.Des which can also be taken by the Arts and Commerce students. Candidates who have completed their degree or a diploma or a 3 year PG course can apply for this course. A 2-year M.Arts course is also offered with specialisations like languages, social work, political science, geography, philosophy, sociology etc. IIT Gandhinagar, Chennai and Guwahati are offering this course. They conduct their own written examination and interview process for admission in M.Arts. MBA Programmes are also offered at eight IITs including IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Jodhpur.
