Udaipur SIERT removes Nehru from Class VIII textbook

In a curriculum revision, Udaipur-based State Institute of Education Research and Training (SIERT) has removed references to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru from two chapters in the revised social science textbook. The textbook will be introduced in schools affiliated to the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) from this academic session.

The information has been uploaded on the website of the Rajasthan State Textbook Board. This organization is responsible for publishing books for the state education board. The physical textbook however is not yet in the market.

The book has references to Mahatma Gandhi, Veer Sawarkar, Bhagat Singh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Subhas Chandra Bose and leader of the freedom movement Hemu Kalani. This exclusion of Nehru has not gone down well with State Congress party with Sachin Pilot stating that the party would launch an agitation against this at a national level.
