Udaipur, March 22, 2025 - The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a warning to students, parents, and the general public about fake degrees being offered by unauthorized institutions. The Commission has said that some institutions are violating the UGC Act by awarding degrees illegally.
According to UGC, only universities established under a State Act, Central Act, or Provincial Act, or those specifically empowered under the UGC Act, 1956, can issue valid degrees. Degrees from unrecognized institutions will not be accepted for higher education or jobs.
UGC has noticed that several institutions are offering degrees without proper authorization. It has warned that such degrees will not be recognized. In February, Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar informed the Lok Sabha that 21 institutions were listed as fake universities on the UGC website. Since 2014, 12 fake universities have been shut down.
To protect students, UGC has been issuing warnings through its website and social media. The government has also filed FIRs against fake universities and sent legal notices to institutions granting invalid degrees.
