Udaipur, February 1, 2025 - In the latest Union Budget 2025-26, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced significant steps to boost education in India. These measures include increasing student capacity at IITs, promoting digital infrastructure, supporting multilingual education, and investing in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for education.
IITs to Expand with New Infrastructure
The Finance Minister revealed that the total student capacity at the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has doubled in the last decade, rising from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh. To meet the growing demand, the government will develop additional infrastructure at five IITs established after 2014, allowing space for 6,500 more students.
50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in Government Schools
Another important announcement was the setting up of 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in government schools over the next five years. These labs will help students innovate and learn through hands-on experience in science and technology.
Broadband Connectivity for Secondary Schools
Recognizing the importance of digital infrastructure, the government plans to extend broadband connectivity to all government secondary schools under the BharatNet project, ensuring better access to digital learning resources.
Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme for Multilingual Education
To support multilingual education, the government will introduce the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme. This scheme aims to provide digital-format books in Indian languages for school and higher education.
Centre of Excellence for AI in Education
Building upon its previous AI-focused initiatives, the government announced the creation of a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Education. With an investment of Rs 500 crore, this centre will focus on enhancing AI-driven learning tools and research in education.
