Mumbai, Nov 24, 2025: Before Dharmendra entered the industry, no one in his family’s three generations had any connection with acting. As the son of a school headmaster in a Punjabi Jat household, Dharam Singh Deol—later known simply as Dharmendra—was never expected to choose a path so far from tradition. Yet he did, and what followed was extraordinary. He went on to dominate Indian cinema for more than six decades, appearing in over 300 films and becoming one of Bollywood’s most enduring stars.

The Dreams and the Stepping Stone

Born in the village of Nasrali in Ludhiana district, Dharmendra grew up deeply attached to Hindi cinema. A devoted admirer of Dilip Kumar, he nurtured a quiet dream of acting from an early age. That dream took shape when he entered a talent search competition organised by a leading cine magazine. He won the contest, opening the door to his first opportunity in films.

Soon after, Dharmendra left the fields of Punjab and travelled to Mumbai, the city that would define his destiny. He made his screen debut in 1960 with Arjun Hingorani’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, marking the beginning of a storied journey that would forever change the landscape of Indian cinema.

But the first film did not win the hearts of the audience. It was a flop at the box office, and no one noticed the newcomer. Yet the dream of the young man from Punjab did not stop. His first success came the very next year with Shola Aur ShabnamIn the following three years, Anpad and Bimal Roy’s Bandini were added to his filmography.

Then, in 1964, he acted with Saira Banu and Rajendra Kumar in Aai Milan Ki Bela. The film became a super-duper hit, and Dharmendra received the National Award in the Supporting Actor category. After this, he never had to look back.

Rise of a Superstar

Commercially successful films like HaqiqatPhool Aur PatharMamta, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Mere Hamdum Mere Dost and Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke made his position strong in the industry. His name became a symbol of success, and he soon earned the title of Bollywood’s He-Man.

Heroines of that era admired his strong screen presence. He worked opposite top actresses like Sadhana, Babita, Saira Banu, and Sharmila Tagore.

His chemistry with Hema Malini began with Jeevan Mrityu and later grew stronger in Tum Haseen Main JawanSharafat, Seeta Aur GeetaRaja Jaani, and Sholay. Their pairing became iconic in Hindi cinema.

At this time, his love story with Hema Malini was at its peak. He was already a father. Dharmendra had married Prakash Kaur at 19. He fell in love with Hema in the film industry but never left his first family. Hema too never wanted him to abandon his wife and sons.

Both later married under Arya Samaj rituals, and their two families continued in separate but respectful paths. Sunny, Bobby, Ajita, Vijeta, Esha, and Ahana always shared cordial relations. Dharmendra remained proud of each child carrying the “Deol” name.

An Actor Beyond His Image

Though known for his masculinity, Dharmendra explored deep emotional roles. Notable examples include Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Satyakam, Jagannath Chatterjee’s Pari, and Basu Chatterjee’s Dillagi. These films showed the actor’s range beyond superstardom.

Staying at the top in Bollywood is difficult. The eras of Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jeetendra all came and went. Yet Dharmendra held his ground.

Except for guest roles in Guddi and Andha Kanoon, his major collaborations with Amitabh were in Sholay and Chupke Chupke. In both, he let his natural charm shine without trying to overshadow Big B.

Dharmendra's tryst with Udaipur dates back to 1970. Two movies, 'Mera Gaon Mera Desh' released in 1971 and 'Samadhi' released in 1972 were shot in Udaipur.  While 'Samadhi' had scenes shot on location at Eklingji Temple in Kailashpuri near Udaipur, 'Mera Gaon Mera Desh' was shot much nearer at the Chirva village.

His later films included LoaferJugnuJheel Ke Us PaarYaadon Ki BaaraatResham Ki DoriDream GirlThe Burning Train, and Khatron Ke Khiladi.

As a senior actor, he continued winning hearts in Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir SeRocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.

Beyond acting, he ventured into production and politics, but his true identity always remained that of an actor. Today, his charm, his style, and his unforgettable roles continue to live on — a shining legacy that will never fade.
