December 10, 2024 – Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia has created history by being nominated for the Best Director (Motion Picture category) at the 82nd Golden Globes awards 2025 for her film All We Imagine as Light. It is the first time that an Indian has received nomination in this category.

Her film has also received nomination for Best Motion Picture in the Non-English Language category. The nominations were announced yesterday by actors Morris Chestnut and Mindy Kaling.

Other nominations in the Best Director category are Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, Sean Baker for Anora, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Edward Berger for Conclave, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance.

On hearing about the nominations, Kapadia said:  "I’m deeply honoured by this nomination and grateful to the HFPA for this recognition. This is a celebration of everyone who worked so passionately on the film. To everyone in India, All We Imagine as Light is still in theatres - please go watch it and support us!”

The film also made history when it won the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May, becoming the first Indian title from India to do so.

All We Imagine as Light centres around the lives of two Malayali nurses Prabha and Anu, who are living in Mumbai, and their friend and cook Parvaty. The cast includes Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon.
