Muharram, the first month of Islamic calendar, commemorates the sacrifice of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and his 72 companions at Karbala. The seventh day of Muharram is considered as one of the most tragic day in the event of Karbala.

In Udaipur, the day was observed with all the associated rituals. In remembrance of the martyrs, the followers of Islam took out traditional Chhadi procession today. The procession started from Masjid situated in Loha Bazaar at 9:30 am and passed the Muslim majority areas including Alipura, Rahman Colony and then to Shastri Circle, Dholibawadi, Mahawatwadi, Silavatwadi and finally culminated at the Paltan Mosque at Chetak Circle.

Many Muslims tie wish knots on the Chhadi with recitation of verses from the Quran. The tenth of the month also known as the day of Ashura, will be observed on 7th December; the day on which the Muslim community remembers the sacrifice of Hussain ibn Ali and take out a procession.
