We take you on through a unique fair (Mela), which is held only for women and children. This fair, known as the Hariyali Amavasya Mela, is held over two days in Udaipur. While the first day is an open event, the second day is dedicated only to women and children.
The center of this fair is Saheliyon ki Badi, located at Udaipur. Stalls are setup in and across the entire stretch of road outside the Saheliyon ki Badi. The peripheri also includes UDA Bridge, Sukhadia Circle and Fatehsagar - stalls are set up in this entire peripheri. Men are not allowed on day 2 of the fair. The fair was held on 4 and 5 August this year.
The Hariyali Amavasya Mela, which has been held in Mewar for hundreds of years in the Indian calendar month of Sawan (Monsoon), is a gift from Maharana Fateh Singh's queen. One day she told the King that the second day of the Hariyali Amavasya fair should be only for women. Fulfilling the queen's wish, Maharana Fateh Singh agreed to hold a fair only for women and children on the second day. If any man entered this fair, he had to face the wrath of the Maharana. This tradition of the past has continued till today and the administration makes arrangements to ensure that no one other than women, girls and very young boys (accompanying their mothers) should enter the peripheral area in which the fair is being conducted. The Udaipur Municipal Corporation, which organizes the fair is trying to increase the attraction of the fair every year. The cultural programs organized in the fair make the women dance.
Women of Udaipur wait for this fair of friends throughout the year. They enjoy this fair a lot. The women who come here seem very happy that there is a day in the year when they can enjoy themselves freely and there is no one to stop them. Thousands of women who come to the fair enjoy the swings and food items along with shopping. The absence of men makes it comfortable for women and children to enjoy the fair and what it has to offer, without any apprehensions.
